“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.” Ephesians 6:1–3 (NASB95)
Growing up my mother often quoted this scripture reminding me that obedience was important to God. She said my obedience to live within their boundaries would keep me safe, happy, and healthy. Admittedly obedience and honor was not always easy!
As a parent, I have a greater appreciation and understanding of God’s instruction to children to obey and honor. If a parent/child relationship includes honor, obedience comes easier. Honor is to appreciate, value, and respect the thoughts, experiences, words and actions of another.
As parents, we can lay a foundation of faith for their lives that will lead them to make good choices. How? Rely on your resources and relay them to your children.
Rely on the Resource of His Word – Use the examples of people in the Bible who learned the importance of obedience through consequences such as; Adam and Eve, Noah, and Jesus. Make their lives and situations relatable and when an opportunity arises relay their stories to your children.
Rely on the Resource of Prayer – Prayer is the most underutilized tool of parenting. When your child is faced with difficult decisions relay to them how you have been praying for them. Give examples of prayers offered and answered on their behalf. In doing show you will demonstrate God’s work in their lives.
Rely on the Resource of your Experiences – God hand selected you to be your child’s parent. Surrender your past, the good and the bad, to the Lord. When the time is right, God will highlight a lesson you’ve learned. Relay those lessons with humility, love, and gratitude for all that God has done.
Rely on the Resource of your Example – Live your faith. Obey your parents and honor them, and obey the Lord and honor him. If your parents chose a life without the Lord speak of them with grace, forgiveness and hope. Remind your children the Lord offers us the opportunity to turn from our sin and begin again. Relay to them that in learning to obey and honor their parents they are ultimately learning to obey and honor the Lord.
