Michele's first book, Untangled: The Truth Will Set You Free, released October 1, 2016, from BroadStreet Publishing. These deeply personal tales trace Michele’s experiences from her younger years where she met God while hiding under the bed to fateful decisions in her teens that would follow her into adulthood to the spiritual hope and healing that rescued and revived her. The recollections weave between present and past, lending the book a cinematic feel that reads more like a gripping novel.
It’s a new career path Michele spent 10 years preparing for without realizing why. A decade before sitting down to write Untangled, she began taking classes and reading books on writing. She even wrote for a local newspaper. Despite all that, Michele was unsure if she should share her own journey so publicly. She hesitated, but God had other plans, urging her to recount her story of restoration to help others heal. It was nearly two years before she had a finished manuscript. She rewrote it three times, forcing herself to strip away the protective filters and simply tell the truth. In the end, the book is the perfect balance of honesty and vulnerability without veering into sensationalism.
Untangled doesn’t just tell Michele’s story, though. We’re all working on something this side of Heaven, and this book holds up a mirror to our own lives, bringing to the surface the experiences that have left us tangled up and crying out to God. Then it reminds us that He’s right there waiting to patiently help us untangle our lives and redeem them in ways we can’t even imagine. Of course, restoration doesn’t come in one fell swoop, it happens in bite-size pieces, but Untangled gives each of us permission ... encouragement even! ... to dive into the healing waters and begin the process.
"You know you’re free when you feel comfortable telling the whole story without shame, fear, blame or guilt. When it doesn’t hurt to talk about it, you know you’re fully healed. That’s what the world is looking for—a way to move on! Not everyone feels safe hanging his or her old laundry up in front of everyone, and probably shouldn’t! But I don’t mind doing so at The Clothesline Conference or even for a Sunday AM service. It’s about what everyone wants to find, freedom. The beauty is, I leave my stories behind to do their work. I don’t believe anyone wants to be told about a relationship with God, they want to see it, feel it, touch it, to make sure it’s real. Telling the whole truth with a chuckle sprinkled in seems to do that.”—Michele
