We’re each living out a unique story, a life marked by our own personal ups and downs, notable for both the triumphs and the traumas. Of course, some stories unfold with more twists and turns than others. Pioneering contemporary Christian singer Michele Pillar could never have predicted the path her life would take. She was still a bright-eyed college student and recent beauty queen when she sang on Praise II for Maranatha! Music, recording classics-in-the-making “Thou Art Worthy,” “Jesus What a Wonder You Are” and “In Moments Like These.”
As word of her talent spread throughout Southern California and beyond, opportunity came knocking. She worked with The Billy Graham Association, performed for the King of Thailand and made numerous TV appearances. Her unique gospel project with Erick Nelson, The Misfit, is now considered a CCM classic, and Michele also lent her voice to the animated hit show The Simpsons, skillfully imitating Karen Carpenter and others. Michele studied acting and worked, represented by the William Morris Agency in Los Angeles. Michele was featured in commercials for Lexus, Levi Strauss, and other clients. She also enjoyed acting in live theater and co-authored the music for “Magdalene” with DOVE winner, Chris Eaton and Allison Allen, of Women of Faith. Along the way, she became a three-time GRAMMY nominee, recording landmark albums for Sparrow Records including Michele Pillar, Reign on Me and Look Who Loves You Now.
She was flying high in 1985 when a public fall from grace left her ministry in shambles, her heart broken and her mind reeling. As Michele worked hard to repair the lingering damage from a difficult childhood, a “comeback” was the furthest thing from her mind. She was far too focused on personal healing, discovering a deeper faith in the process.
So Michele was as surprised as anyone when, after years out of the spotlight, her ministry returned in a very organic way. As a wiser, more authentic version of herself, Michele realized she had a new message to share. Today, she’s a sought-after speaker and singer. She recently added the title “author” to her diverse resume with her new book, first book, Untangled, released October 1, 2016, from BroadStreet Publishing
Michele’s reach extends to social media as well. Her Facebook posts regularly go viral, reaching upwards of 20 million users. And her message is resonating in some surprising places. Women 18-24 making up her biggest demographic on Facebook. At first, she wasn’t sure how to respond to millennials, but she sensed God saying, “I’m sending them to you!” Somehow these kids feel safe to ask really hard questions, and Michele is ready to offer honest answers. Her video Bible devotional, The Two Minute Miracle posts Monday-Friday on her Facebook Page and is viewed by over 20 thousand “Likers” weekly.
Michele Pillar’s story is far from over. Today, she’s busier than ever, juggling her vibrant ministry and life at home in rural Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee with her husband, Matt. We can’t wait to see what unfolds as God continues to write her next chapter.
